AURORA, Ill., Feb. 1, 2016 Seasonal demand and falling crude oil costs have sent pump prices to the lowest mark in six years. The national average price of $1.81 per gallon is the cheapest price since January 2009, and retail averages have fallen for 70 of the past 80 days for a total savings of 40 cents per gallon over this span. Crude oil supply continues to outpace demand, which has helped push gas prices down by seven cents on the week, 18 cents on the month and 21 cents on the year. Illinois and Indiana drivers are currently paying on average $1.70 and $1.67 respectively for a gallon of regular unleaded. These prices are also the lowest prices Illinois and Indiana drivers have paid since January 2009. 

    In January in Illinois, gas prices averaged $1.89, which was down $.11 from December 2015 and $.19 less than a year ago. In northern Indiana, gas prices averaged $1.76 in January, which was down $.12 from December 2015 and down $.17 from January 2015.

Other January monthly averages across the region: 

  • In Cook County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $2.11, which is down $.07 from last month and $.19 lower than last year’s price-per-gallon. 
  • In DuPage County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.93 per gallon, which is a $.14 decrease from December 2015 and down $.18 from last year. 
  • In Kane County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.90 per gallon, which is down $.13 compared to last month and $.19 lower than January 2015’s price. 
  • In Lake County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.91 per gallon, which is $.12 lower than last month and down by $.18 compared to this time last year.
  • In McHenry County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.92 per gallon, which is $.09 lower than last month’s average and $.12 lower than last year.
  • In Will County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.86 per gallon, which is $.16 lower compared to last month and $.23 lower compared to last year. 
  • In Champaign County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.67 per gallon, a decrease of $.14 from December 2015 and $.29 lower than last year.
  • In McLean County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.72 per gallon, which is $.14 lower than last month and $.24 lower than last year.
  • In Peoria County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.75 per gallon, which is down $.12 compared to last month and down $.20 from January 2015. 
  • In Sangamon County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.76 per gallon, which is $.10 lower than last month and $.16 lower than last year.
  • In Winnebago County, Ill., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.84 per gallon, a decrease of $.12 from December and $.16 lower than January 2015.
  • In Allen County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.77 per gallon, which is $.09 lower than last month and $.22 lower than January 2015’s price.
  • In Lake County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.76 per gallon, which is down $.11 from December’s average and is an $.18 decrease from a year ago.
  • In Porter County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.77 per gallon, which is $.12 lower than last month and $.14 lower than last year.
  • In St. Joseph County, Ind., self-serve regular unleaded gasoline averages $1.76 per gallon, which is $.12 lower compared to last month and $.25 lower than last year.
