The Michigan state average is the lowest since February of 2019

09 March 2020

DEARBORN, Mich., (March 9, 2020) - Gas prices in Michigan dropped 12 cents compared to a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.24 per gallon for regular unleaded, which is the lowest price seen since February of 2019. This price is 12 cents less than this time last month and 29 cents less than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $34 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of $10 from when prices were their highest last July.

A healthy stock level and cheaper crude prices continue to push pump prices down this week. In its latest weekly report, the Energy Information Administration revealed that total domestic stocks of gasoline fell by 4.3 million bbl to 252 million bbl, which is still 1.3 million bbl higher than 2019’s level at this time.

"Pump prices will likely continue to face downward pressure through the end of the winter driving season, especially amid concerns about the coronavirus causing the price of crude to decline," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "However, the current refinery maintenance season could put pressure on regional refinery utilization, supply and gas prices as we approach the spring driving season."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.30 per gallon, about 10 cents less than last week’s average and about 22 cents less than this same time last year.
