The Michigan state average is 18 cents higher than this time last month

11 January 2021

DEARBORN, Mich., (January 11, 2021) - Gas prices in Michigan are down 5 cents compared to a week ago. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.17 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 18 cents more than this time last month but still 46 cents less than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $33 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of $7 from when prices were their highest last January.

According to the latest data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand fell from 8.1 million b/d to 7.4 million b/d — the lowest level recorded since the end of May 2020 — and total domestic supply increased by 4.5 million bbl to 241.1 million bbl last week. Domestic crude prices climbing above $50 per barrel and growing total refinery utilization, which increased from 79 percent to 81 percent in the latest EIA weekly report, have contributed to higher pump prices in some parts of the country.

"Despite the low demand, if crude prices continue to stay above $50 per barrel, Michigan drivers could see pump prices hold steady this week," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA - The Auto Club Group.

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased slightly. Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.21 per gallon, about 1 cent less than last week’s average and about 40 cents less than this same time last year.
