State average is $2.15/gallon ahead of Labor Day weekend; holiday weekend travelers likely to benefit
DEARBORN, Mich., (August 31, 2020) - Gas prices in Michigan are down 3 cents compared to last week. Michigan drivers are now paying an average price of $2.15 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is just 1 cent more than this time last month but still 49 cents less than this time last year.
Michigan motorists are paying an average of $32.25 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; a discount of more than $6 from when prices around this time last year.
In the new weekly report from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), gas demand increased from 8.63 million b/d to 9.16 million b/d – one of the highest recorded rates of the year. However, last week’s estimated rate is 739,000 b/d lower than the rate last year at this time. Moreover, total domestic gasoline supplies decreased by 4.6 million bbl last week to 239.2 million bbl, but the current level is 7.2 million bbl higher than the level at this time last year.
“As demand jumps, so did pump prices, especially in areas along Hurricane Laura’s path,” said Howard Hughey, spokesperson, AAA - The Auto Club Group. “However, lower than usual demand and ample stock levels will contain any significant pump price increases to impacted areas. Our state, much like the rest of the country, should see minimal change.”
Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price stayed the same. Metro Detroit’s current average is $2.21 per gallon, 51 cents less than this time last year.

Gas Price and Labor Day Travel
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused gas prices to be much lower than this time last year significantly impacting travel throughout 2020. AAA’s summer forecast showed that Americans will take more than 700 million trips from July 1 – September 30. Car trips are accounting for 97% (683 million) of the favored mode of transportation.
As such, Labor Day travelers will likely benefit from much lower prices compared to last year as they fill up for road trips. However, there are still a number of factors that could push prices higher for Labor Day weekend, such as expectation of strong demand and the forthcoming busiest month for hurricane season.
