The Michigan state average is still up 82 cents compared to this time last year

27 December 2021

DEARBORN, Mich., (December 27, 2021) - Gas prices in Michigan decreased 4 cents compared to last week. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $3.10 per gallon for regular unleaded. This price is 23 cents less than this time last month but still 82 cents more than this time last year.

Motorists are paying an average of $46 for a full 15-gallon tank of gasoline; an increase of about $7 from when prices were their highest last January.

According to new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA), total domestic gasoline stocks increased by 5.5 million bbl to 224.1 million bbl last week. On the other hand, gasoline demand decreased from 9.47 million b/d to 8.99 million b/d. At the close of Thursday’s formal trading session, WTI increased by $1.03 to settle at $73.79. Despite demand concerns over the omicron variant of COVID-19, crude prices increased last week after the EIA reported that total domestic crude stocks decreased by 4.7 million bbl to 423.6 million bbl. The current stock level is 15.2 percent lower than in December 2020, contributing to pressure on domestic crude prices.

“Typically, falling demand and increased supply would support higher drops in pump prices, but fluctuations in the price of crude oil have helped to keep pump prices elevated,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "If crude prices continue to climb, pump prices will likely follow suit."

Compared to last week, Metro Detroit’s average daily gas price decreased. Metro Detroit’s current average is $3.23 per gallon. This price is 3 cents less than last week’s average but still $1 more than this same time last year.
