With the remodeling boom spurred by the pandemic, many homeowners may not be fully covered
DEARBORN, Mich., (May 2, 2023) — The COVID-19 pandemic caused people to spend more time at home, ushering in a home remodeling boom across the country. Homeowners updated everything from kitchens, to bathrooms, exterior landscaping, or adding a pool. Unfortunately, many have forgotten one important thing. Updating their insurance policy to cover the additions.
According to a recent AAA Consumer Pulse™ survey, 50% of Michigan homeowners have made improvements to their home within the past year. However, more than half (56%) of them HAVE NOT updated their home insurance policy to reflect the changes.
“Many homeowners across Michigan have put in time, money and precious resources to make key upgrades to their homes,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokeswoman, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “What they may not realize is if they suffer a loss without updating their coverage, their policy may not cover the repairs.”
Even as we move out of the pandemic, demand for renovations remains strong. According to a survey by the home service website Angi, over 89% of homeowners were either planning or working on home projects in 2022. Per the survey the most important modifications homeowners considered included:
- Heating related (windows/doors, heating & cooling, HVAC)
- Kitchens or living rooms
- Home exterior
- Bathrooms and bedrooms
- Outdoor landscaping
“Before you finalize remodeling plans, it’s important that you talk to your insurance provider,” added Woodland. “New home upgrades are a perfect opportunity to get a AAA Triple Check to make sure you have the right coverage for your home and all the discounts you qualify for.”
AAA Triple Check™ is AAA’s comprehensive household coverage review where consumers are connected with AAA agents who conduct a free review of their current home insurance policy.
