Collaborative Effort Brings Traffic Incident Management Equipment to the Community

19 October 2021

DEARBORN, Mich., (October 19, 2021) — The Genesee Township Police & Fire Department was presented with the 2021 AAA Traffic Safety Grant Award. The $292 AAA Traffic Safety Grant funded the purchase of traffic incident management equipment that will be used to help promote safety during emergency incidents, reduce the risk of crashes at incident sites and protect the motoring public.

"This equipment is critical to alert drivers anytime streets are closed or a lane is blocked for an emergency," stated Lieutenant Robert Watters, Genesee Township Police Department.

This grant will help the department acquire much-needed traffic safety barricades that is not available through current fiscal resources. The equipment purchased also helps Genesee Township meet the standards set by MIOSHA (Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration).

After reviewing 257 applications, AAA awarded a total of $76,922 to nine first responders across the state. Since 1993, the AAA Traffic Safety Grant program has been awarding grants for life-saving equipment throughout Michigan.  Over the years, nearly 1.5 million dollars-worth of traffic safety equipment has been donated to various organizations in the state.

“Improving traffic safety in our communities is part of our DNA and that starts with our roadside heroes,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “We are extremely honored to be able to help, even in a small way, so many great agencies across Michigan.”

AAA’s 2022 traffic safety grant program application period opens on January 1, 2022.
