Fifth Grader Recognized for Leadership and Commitment to Safety

MADISON, Wis., (June 8, 2020) – Fifth grader Xavier Lindsey from Roosevelt Elementary School in Kenosha has received the Lifesaving Medal Award, the highest AAA School Safety Patrol™ honor  Lindsey is one of only four students nationwide to be presented to award.

On a cold day in December, Mark Mantague “Grandpa Mark” was returning home with his four year old grandson Wesley after having dropped off his other grandchildren at school. As they approached the crosswalk where Lindsey was performing his duties as a safety patroller, Wesley started to dart across the street into oncoming traffic. Lindsey sensed Wesley approaching from behind and quickly grabbed Wesley, saving him from what could have been a heartbreaking situation.

“Xavier’s reactions were the only thing that stopped a tragic accident from happening,” said Tom Pacetti, Roosevelt Safety Patrol Advisor. “I credit his patrol training for saving a life, his actions were exemplary.”

Out of gratitude, Grandpa Mark wrote a letter to Pacetti stating how he witnessed a simple act of heroism and how calm Lindsey was as he saved Wesley’s life.

“One day I was patrolling and crossing a whole bunch of people and there were a lot of cars going super-fast,” said Lindsey. “While I was in the hold position (arms extended) waiting for cars to pass, a little kindergartener tried to run out into the streets, so I grab him and brought him back to the sidewalk safe. I was just doing my job and am so happy I could grab and save him from being hit by a car.”

A proud tradition since 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol™ now includes more than 600,000 patrollers in schools nationwide. Students who give their time and energy to make the AAA School Safety Patrol™ a success are encouraged and supported by school officials, parent-teacher groups, police departments, and AAA clubs. AAA has presented the Lifesaving Medal to participants who have prevented potentially tragic incidents since 1949.

“It is an honor to present Xavier with the Lifesaving Medal Award,” said Nick Jarmusz, Director of Public Affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group.  “We, at AAA, are very proud of his actions as he truly embodies the qualities of leadership and service that the AAA School Safety Patrol™ program seeks to instill in participating students.”
