Fifth Grader Recognized for Leadership and Commitment to Safety

08 June 2020

MADISON, Wis., (June 4, 2020) –Fifth grader Sydnie Wedan, from Four Corners Elementary, has been honored as the AAA School Safety Patroller of the Year for the state of Wisconsin.  Wedan was selected from numerous candidates from across the state based on her leadership qualities, safety knowledge, and school and community involvement.

Wedan was nominated by Parent Involvement Coordinator, Ellen Chicka, who said that not only does she excel as a peer leader, she develops trusting relationships with kindergartners, leading to Wedan being selected to supervise ten of them and assist during lunch and recess. As a safety patroller she is diligent and keeps track of the other safety patrollers’ shifts, kindly reminding her fellow patrollers when they are on duty. She volunteers to step in when they cannot do it.

“Sydnie is caring, hardworking and has earned the respect of younger students”, said Chicka. “They listen and follow her guidance on the playground and while walking to the bus and cafeteria. She has also gained a wealth of knowledge about school safety procedures and policies because she does not hesitate to ask questions concerning the well-being of her fellow students.”

Wedan has been very active as a safety patroller, starting last year when as a fourth grader she volunteered to be a junior safety patroller. She also volunteered to bag groceries for the AAA Safety Patroller fundraiser which earned her positive feedback from the school district’s law enforcement liaison officer. She also donates food, toys and books to ensure that all the children in the community have what they need.

“Being in the AAA School Safety Patrol™ Program has helped me develop important skills for my future,” said Wedan. “I am learning important life skills and it has helped me become a better communicator with more self-confidence and patience.”

A proud tradition since 1920, the AAA School Safety Patrol™ now includes more than 600,000 patrollers in schools nationwide. Students who give their time and energy to make the AAA School Safety Patrol™ a success are encouraged and supported by school officials, parent-teacher groups, police departments, and AAA clubs.

“It is an honor to award Sydnie with the Patroller of the Year Award,” said Nick Jarmusz, Director of Public Affairs for AAA – The Auto Club Group.  “She truly embodies the qualities of leadership and service that the AAA School Safety Patrol™ program seeks to instill in participating students.”
