DEARBORN, Mich., (September 24, 2020) —  Climax-Scotts High School graduate Simon Swager will start his first year of college with a $2,500 scholarship earned in the 26th annual AAA Michigan School Safety Patrol Scholarship Program. The program rewards graduating Michigan seniors who formerly served as AAA School Safety Patrol members in elementary school.  To be considered for the AAA Michigan Safety Patrol scholarship, students must have:

  • A GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • ACT score of 21 or higher or SAT score of 950 or higher
  • Letters of reference from school and non-school sources
  • Proof of AAA School Safety Patrol participation

Swager’s AAA School Safety Patrol experience at Climax-Scotts Elementary School was where his leadership characteristics started to take shape, particularly when he was appointed Captain.  “I quickly realized that while the group as a whole may be succeeding, each person plays a vital part in making it succeed,” he wrote in his application.  “I value my time as a member of the Safety Patrol because it helped me to grow in compassion for all people and to gain the confidence to help people, especially when others are too afraid to. I didn’t know it at the time, but while I was helping to promote kindness, safety, and respect to the younger students, they were teaching me what it means to be a good human being.”

Simon was Captain of the Cross Country team for 2 years and the Trumpet section leader for the Climax-Scotts High School band. He also serves the community by offering free tutoring services for local students and by mentoring students in the Climax-Scotts Junior High Band.

“Simon has demonstrated the leadership qualities and commitment to community service that the AAA School Safety Patrol embodies and, for those reasons, is well deserving of this scholarship,” stated Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group.  Swager is currently attending Northern Michigan University with a major in Elementary Education.
