Drivers will see safer roads and relief from costly vehicle repairs and extra maintenance
Aurora, Ill. (June 3, 2019) – The transportation infrastructure plan approved by the Illinois General Assembly is a win for motorists, who have been burdened by the high cost of driving on poorly maintained roadways for many years. The plan creates a sustainable source of funding for the state’s roadway network as it begins its second century of service to travelers and commuters.
The average motorist (driving 12,000 miles per year and getting 20 mpg), will pay an additional $164 dollars in gas taxes and registration fees per year under the plan. A recent report from the transportation research group TRIP found that drivers across the state incur up to $633 in additional vehicle operation costs directly attributable to poor road conditions every year.
AAA has advocated for a sustainable transportation system funded by dedicated user fees for over 100 years, with the first bond issue to create the Illinois state highway system receiving voter approval in 1918. The state’s roadway network remains crucial to its economy and quality of life, and the plan approved by the General Assembly is a desperately needed investment in the reliability and safety of that system.
