11 February 2019

DETROIT, Mich., (February 11, 2019) — Gas prices in Michigan are declining, after bouncing an average of 18 cents during the past week. The state average set a new 2019-high of $2.33 per gallon on Thursday, after wholesale gasoline prices surged 17 cents. Since Thursday, the state average has since declined at a rate of 1-cent per day. Michigan drivers are now paying an average of $2.29 per gallon at the pump - 14 cents more than this time last week.

Michigan currently ranks 19th for most expensive gas prices among all 50 states and the District of Columbia. However, pump prices in the state remain 28 cents per gallon less than this time last year.

Drivers in Metro Detroit are paying an average price of $2.27 per gallon. The metro average is 10 cents more than this time last week, and 20 cents more than a month ago. Regardless of the higher price, drivers in Detroit are still paying nearly 30 cents less than this time last year.

  • Most expensive gas price averages: Traverse City ($2.35), Marquette ($2.34), Jackson ($2.33)
  • Least expensive gas price averages: Flint ($2.23), Metro Detroit ($2.27), Ann Arbor ($2.29)

Gas prices around the United States rose an average of 2 cents, during the past week. The national average price for regular unleaded is $2.28 per gallon.

"Drivers continue to find gas prices that are well below what they paid this time last year," said Nancy Cain, spokesperson, AAA - The Auto Club Group. "Low oil prices have helped keep gas prices relatively low, so far this year. However, prices should bounce higher this spring, as demand climbs and refineries switch to a more expensive-to-produce summer-blend gasoline. AAA forecasts the national average to peak around $2.75 per gallon by Memorial Day weekend."

Crude oil prices trended lower last week. The US benchmark WTI settled at $52.64 per barrel on Friday - $2.62 per barrel less than the week before. This was the first weekly decline in crude oil prices in five weeks. Concerns reemerged late last week, that the ongoing US-China trade war could slow global demand. This overshadowed optimism in the market that OPEC cuts and sanctions against Venezuela exports are helping to balance global supplies. So far this year, the highest daily settlement of WTI was $55.26 per barrel on February 1.
