OMAHA, NE (May 17, 2022) – Memorial Day weekend is expected to be the busiest in three years, building on a travel resurgence that began earlier this spring. This year’s forecast marks the second highest single-year increase in travelers since 2010 (2021 was the highest), bringing volumes almost in line with pre-pandemic levels.

With the official start to summer just six weeks away, AAA wants travelers to know if they’re planning a Memorial Day getaway, start now if you haven’t already.

AAA expects a significant rebound in the number of Americans planning to travel this Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Thanksgiving will be on the lighter side when it comes to the typical number of travelers. 

More than 55 million travelers are making plans to kick off the holiday season with a trip of 50 miles or more away from home this Thanksgiving. This will be the second-highest Thanksgiving travel volume since AAA began tracking in 2000, trailing only the record set in 2005.
