HOLIDAY TRAVELERS GIVEN THE GIFT OF STABLE GAS PRICES FOR ANOTHER WEEK
TAMPA, Fla.(Dec. 19, 2010)--Holiday travelers won’t see much of an increase in gas prices this week, if they see any at all. Although the price of crude oil closed 23 cents more than last week, the increase isn’t significant enough to move prices higher at a time when millions of people will hit the roads for holiday travel. Crude oil settled Friday at $88.02 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
Although the price of crude flirted with $90 a barrel last week, a stronger U.S. dollar helped balance out increased investor optimism to settle at a price little changed from the past two weeks. Optimism is high in the market with investors projecting a boost in oil demand for 2011 after a report from the American Petroleum Institute showed fuel consumption in November rose 6.5 percent from this time last year.
"Although retail gas prices will remain high, the good news is they will not move higher, offering a slight sigh of relief for the many American’s who fill their gas tank this week before a long road trip," said Jessica Brady, manager, AAA Public Relations. "The national average for retail gasoline increased one cent from last week, while state averages for Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee remain unchanged."
The national average price of unleaded regular gasoline is $2.98 per gallon, up one cent from last week. Florida’s average price of $2.99 remains unchanged from last week. Tennessee’s average price of $2.83 and Georgia’s average price of $2.87 also remain unchanged from last week, respectively.
