One of two students selected from across Michigan
DEARBORN, Mich., (August 14, 2019) — Troy Athens High School graduate Madeline (Maddie) Purvis will start her first year of college with a $2,500 scholarship earned as part of the 25th annual AAA Michigan School Safety Patrol Scholarship Program. The program rewards graduating Michigan seniors who formerly served as AAA School Safety Patrol members in elementary school. To be considered for the AAA Michigan Safety Patrol scholarship, students must have:
- A GPA of 3.0 or higher
- ACT score of 21 or higher or SAT score of 950 or higher
- Letters of reference from school and non-school sources
- Proof of AAA School Safety Patrol participation
Purvis’ AAA School Safety Patrol experience at Costello Elementary School was her first memory of being able to help others. “I was so excited when I was assigned the kindergarten doors,” she wrote in her application. “I remember going home with a great feeling inside, and my mom told me that feeling was my heart – being full and rewarded, because of giving back.” Maddie was president of the Troy Athens Student Council and through her leadership, their annual Athens Charity Week events raised over $130,000!
“Maddie has demonstrated the leadership qualities and commitment to community service that the AAA School Safety Patrol embodies and, for those reasons, is well deserving of this scholarship,” stated Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. Purvis will attend the University of Michigan in the fall and major in Aerospace Engineering.
AAA will coordinate media interview opportunities upon request.
